Dr. Salami-Boukari explained that this book project took birth in her experience of teaching “Selected African Women Writers” at SUNY at Buffalo, NY, as well as “Modern African Literature,” and “Literature of the Black world” at Western Illinois University. The need for further background information and the necessity of providing the students with supporting materials for a better understanding of the socio-historical and cultural contexts Modern African Literature was rooted in became acute as semesters rolled by. As such, though Modern African Literature: Critical Perspectives on Gender and Culture was written with amateur audiences in mind, it is not limited to students reading. People interested in Non-Western Literatures, World Literature, Anglophone, and Francophone Literatures, Women’s Studies, Diversity studies, Multi-cross-Cultural Studies or General Education may find pertinent information and insightful discussions on sensitive topics. Contemporary issues tackled in this collection of essays based on African literature, are tradition and modernity, the colonial impact, gender perceptions, male/female relationships, African and Western world visions, religion and its impact on society, not withstanding a comparative approach to marriage, female circumcision/genital mutilation (FGM), body modification, namely tattooing, and piecing among others. Other issues explored in this pedagogic work are the paradigmatic and theoretic approaches to African women’s discourses, an exploration of standpoint and activism grounded in cultural realities as well as acknowledging global common features African women writers share. Their avant-garde and agency role in developing their societies while equally contributing to the richness of world literature based on experiential or fictional breathtaking narratives, are illustrated throughout selected novels studied in this book.
