This stunning novel set in a Muslim society of East Africa, centers on a young girl, Amina, and her struggles against all kinds of challenges presented to her by religion and patriarchy while growing up. From a young age Amina has wished she could be freed of practices which hinder the progress of women in her society, such as excision, vagina sewing or forced and arranged marriage. Amina also has witnessed many horrendous behaviors, such as honor killing, which have left her traumatized. Amina chooses to reject the existing order, setting herself on a collision course with her father, elders, and her entire society. Knowing that her rebellion will place her life in danger, she decides to escape and ends up in Mombasa, where she completes high school and goes to college, imagining that her dreams at last have come true. Soon, however, she realizes that her struggle has just started. Born a Muslim in a world not controlled by secular Law but by Islamic Law, she must behave and act as a Muslim woman.
