A Simple Writing Manual
|
JAMES A. WILDEMAN (Covenant College, USA) |
A Simple Writing Manual covers only what its author considers the bare essentials of the composing process. The book focuses on moments in the composing process which often frustrate writers, especially beginning a writing task and doing meaningful revisions of drafts. Although there is some coverage of the conventions of academic writing, much useful advice has been left out so that writers can concentrate wholeheartedly on more essential tasks faced by novice writers: discovering a subject on which they can speak with authority, finding ways to get their ideas on paper relatively easily, defining with care the audience for a particular piece of public discourse. A Simple Writing Manual could be used in a variety of contexts. But it would be best suited for an English Composition class that was organized as a workshop, where students and their teacher spent most of their time and energy discussing the students’ essays in progress. Since the book does not aim at comprehensive coverage of writing task, it would be most appropriate for a class taught by someone familiar with the history and theory of composition instruction. ISBN 1-931948-72-0 2007 Fundamental for: Creative Writing, English, Composition.
