This Handbook is the ultimate guide for the reader who intends to become a pilgrim and make a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. It contains all the necessary information to design, prepare and succesfully realize a joyful journey along the Medieval pilgrim roads of northern Spain. Clear answers will be given regarding the equipment required. One- hundred and twenty-five maps will safely guide you to the cathedral of Compostellae in Gaelicia. Detailed lists, descriptions and recommendations are provided of all the institutions which diligently await your arrival: albergues, hotels, restaurants, medical centres, banks, churches, shops. Why do people go on a pilgrimage? Where do pilgrims stay overnight? How to keep the costs down? Where does one eat well, and how do I obtain medical treatment "just in case"? No questions maintain unanswered in this Handbook.

Dr. Stefanie K. Winter, Medical Editor

Dr. Stefanie K. Winter was born in Radolfzell (Germany) in 1981. She studied Medicine at the prestigious "Ludwig Maximilian University" in Munich, from which she graduated in 2008. During her studies she worked as a volunteer for the St. John's Ambulance in Munich, and also for Non-Government Organizations such as "Solidarmed" and "Humedica" in various African countries. Currently she is employed as a physician at a hospital in Munich.

In January 2007, Dr. Stephanie Winter made a pilgrimage from Burgos to Santiago de Compostela, a distance of 310 miles, which she walked with great ease. Jack de Groot, who was also on the camino at that time, became aware of her presence, when he was told by a caretaker of a refuge that: "A young doctor walks three days ahead of you. She may well be able to help you with your pilgrim guide." Some two weeks later, just past Villafranca del Bierzo, the two met up and joined forces.

The Camino de Santiago Ultimate Handbook became the first pilgrim guide which deals professionally with the health issues today's pilgrims face.

Dr. Jack de Groot has walked the "Camino de Santiago" numerous times since 2001. In order to keep the Handbook up to date, he and the members of his "Handbook Support Team" walk the various caminos regularly (on a bi-monthly basis) to verify the details. A significant number of persons who actually live and work on the camino also provide essential information. The reader/pilgrim will benefit from these efforts through the updates provided on the website.
